[Neptune] - the Dark Spot (feat. Ewald Pfleger)

from Tales From The Solar System - The Outer Planets by Stan Dart

about

Neptune is the eighth and farthest planet from the Sun in the Solar System. Among the gaseous planets in the Solar System, Neptune is the most dense.
It is not visible to the unaided eye and was the first and only planet found by mathematical prediction rather than by empirical observation. Neptune's atmosphere has active and visible weather patterns. For example, at the time of the 1989 Voyager 2 flyby, the planet's southern hemisphere had a Great Dark Spot comparable to the Great Red Spot on Jupiter. It´s a series of dark spots and unlike Jupiter's spot, which has lasted for hundreds of years, their lifetimes appear to be shorter, forming and dissipating once every few years or so. The spot (with initial dimensions of 13,000 × 6,600 km) was about the same size as Earth, and was similar in general appearance to Jupiter's Great Red Spot. Around the Great Dark Spot, winds were measured blowing up to 2,400 kilometers an hour, the fastest in the Solar System. The Great Dark Spot is thought to represent a hole in the methane cloud deck of Neptune.
