about

Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second smallest planet in the Solar System, after Mercury. Named after the Roman god of war, it is often referred to as the "Red Planet" because the iron oxide prevalent on its surface gives it a reddish appearance. Olympus Mons (Latin for Mount Olympus) is a very large shield volcano on the planet and the second-highest known mountain in the Solar System. By one measure, it has a height of nearly 25 km. Olympus Mons stands almost three times as tall as Mount Everest's height above sea level. Because of the size of it and its shallow slopes, an observer standing on the Martian surface would be unable to view the entire profile of the volcano, even from a great distance.
